My Unforgettable Journey at IFC 2023:

Transforming Growth, Deep Connections, and Powerful Insights

10 November 2023

I have to say that the IFC puts the Fun in fundraising!

I am thrilled to share with you my incredible experience at the International Fundraising Congress (IFC) 2023. This event, held in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands, is nothing short of remarkable. It’s a gathering of fundraising professionals from around the world, a place where magic happens, and I’m excited to take you on this journey with me.

You know, receiving that email from Ruby Chadwick of Resource Alliance, stating that I had been awarded the Emerging Leaders Bursary, filled me with a sense of excitement. It is a testament to the support and guidance I have received from my boss, Robin Heller, President and Founder of The Athena Advisors Consulting, who made it all possible. I could not wait to immerse myself in the world of fundraising at the IFC 2023 and experience its transformative power.

Now, the IFC is not your run-of-the-mill conference. It’s the crème de la crème of fundraising events, with a rich history spanning decades. It’s the place where top-tier speakers, thought leaders, and professionals come together to share their wisdom and insights. This is not just about learning; it’s about connecting and inspiring change in the fundraising community.

The wealth of knowledge I gained at the IFC was mind-blowing. With sessions and workshops led by industry experts, I was like a sponge, absorbing insights into the latest fundraising strategies and best practices. One standout moment was a session on artificial intelligence (AI), led by Microsoft and Fundraise Up. The practical tips and strategies shared in that session were game changers, giving me concrete ideas to implement in my work.

But what truly set the IFC 2023 apart was the personal growth it offered. It was an opportunity to connect with professionals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. These connections evolved into meaningful friendships and collaborations, expanding my horizons, and enriching my professional network. I even jokingly call some of them my “new distant cousins.”

The event covered a wide range of topics relevant to the fundraising profession. From donor engagement and digital fundraising strategies to major gifts, AI, mindfulness, disruptive thinking, corporate partnerships, and ethical considerations in fundraising. There was something for everyone. The diversity of subjects ensured that attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of the current fundraising landscape and acquired practical skills to navigate the ever-evolving environment.

One powerful moment came from the opening keynote by Erica Chenoweth. She reminded us that it only takes 3.5% of a population to mobilise and create real change. Those who want to see progressive change in the world are, in fact, the majority. It was a wake-up call, a reminder of the immense power we hold to make a difference.

Throughout the event, I had numerous “light bulb” moments. Conversations were flowing, ideas were bouncing, and I was both challenged and inspired. From engaging panel discussions to networking sessions, the atmosphere at the IFC 2023 was electric. It was an environment designed to foster meaningful connections and deep reflection.

What truly made the IFC 2023 a magical experience was the attention to detail. The Resource Alliance went above and beyond to create an atmosphere where attendees felt honored and safe. It was this magical environment that allowed for the most profound connections and self-discovery.

In conclusion, the IFC 2023 was more than just an event; it was a life-altering experience. It enhanced my professional knowledge and skills while providing a platform for meaningful connections and personal growth. I’m immensely grateful for Resource Alliance’s Emerging Leaders Bursary and the unwavering support from my boss, Robin Heller. The IFC is a transformative journey that empowers us to make a real difference in the world of fundraising. Remember, you don’t have to be a seasoned professional to make an impact; you just need the right opportunity. The IFC 2023 was that opportunity for me, and it could be for you too. Taken from the 2023 theme “Unite for Impact”, be that 3.5%, and create the change we want to see in the world. It’s in our hands.
